Uneven or customized facet cabs
Cabochons are in trend for a long time and widely used in jewelries. We started our manufacturing of cabochons with normal smooth cabs, after that customers demanded for cabochons with cuttings also so we started faceted (rose, checker board, uneven, honeycomb and customized cut) also. It is difficult to cut very small size in faceted or cabochons with cuttings so normally our production which is situated in India and Thailand, make 2mm and above sizes. In smooth cabs we do below 2mm sizes also but not with cutting.
When it comes to stones in which we have been making cabs with facets, and then it starts from opaque low priced jasper, agate to high priced Larimar, blue sapphire and other stones. We maintain the quality of every piece that goes to our hands. We make the dimensions (length, width and height) as per customers’ requirements. Normally clients ask us for 60 to 65% height of the stone. For example if length of stone is 10mm then height will be approx 6mm to 6.5mm. We can do lower and above also if you have specific requirements in height and dimensions.
Difference between rose cut, honeycomb, checkerboard and uneven cut?
We have a clean chart to explain the different cuttings to our customers to avoid any confusion. Normal cabs come with flat back and smooth top; all others come with cutting on top and flat back.
Rose cut – Triangular cutting on top
Honeycomb cut – Cutting pattern will be like honeycomb (six sided)
Checkerboard – Cutting pattern will be similar to chess
Uneven cut – Uneven facets on top
Mostly designers prefer uneven cut in translucent to transparent stones instead of opaque because facets are clearly visible from distance. Amethyst, Citrine, Topaz, Moonstone, Garnet, Rose quartz, Smoky quartz, Peridot, Tourmaline and other also are more preferred in uneven facet cutting cabochons.
Why some stones are preferred only in cabochons rather than faceted?
Many stones are preferred to cut in cabochon which comes with special effects like star (asterism), chatoyancy , iridescence (rainbow moonstone), adularescence and others. Asterism effect (ruby, sapphire and others) shows best in smooth cabochon. Hardness is another factor behind many stones to make in cabs shape. You will mostly see multi fluorite in smooth cab cutting because of low hardness. Soft stones easily chip in faceted cut.
